Follow the herds as they migrate from the Serengeti Plains to the Masai Mara.

Follow the Great Migration Series

Each year, the migration of the wildebeest and zebra takes place between Kenya’s Masai Mara National Park and Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park. The grazing animals migrate because of rain – or lack thereof. Lions, hyena and cheetah do not migrate, but when there are thousands of plains game, paths will cross!

This exclusive Born Free migration safari allows travelers, for the first time in decades, to cross directly over from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Masai Mara in Kenya – giving them the ability to truly follow the migration!

As the migration moves, so will the base for exploration, optimizing the chances of viewing the vast herds. The accommodations for “The Great Migration Safari” will change in the Serengeti from season to season, as will the amount of time spent in the Serengeti versus the Masai Mara.

One cannot predict the exact timing of the wildlife’s movement or river crossings, as these are spontaneous natural events. Additionally, the Great Migration is not in a continually forward motion; the animals go back and forth, side to side. They mill around, split up or just hang around in one area. Born Free can only make a fair prediction where the best wildlife viewing will be, but based on our 35 years of tracking the path of the migration, we can present the best opportunity to access this great wildlife experience. Plus, there is always resident game in the Serengeti-Mara eco-system.

“The Great Migration Safari” will generally move as shown on the chart below. Accommodations shown on the itinerary are based on travel from May to Mid-July Please contact the Born Free office for the exact itinerary and costing for this very unique safari!

January to Mid-March
Serengeti south, heavy caving season
Lake Masek Lodge; Ndutu Safari Lodge; Kusini

May to Mid-July
Migration heads towards the Western Corridor in the Serengeti
Mbalageti Tented Lodge; Mbuze Mawe; Kirawira

Mid-July to August
The herds congregate in the far northern Serengeti, preparing to cross to the Mara.
Olakira; Sayari; Migration Camp

July to September
The herds usually make their arrival in the Mara and remain for a time.
Mbuze Mawe; Mbalageti Tented Lodge

Mid-Sept to November
This is the time when visiting both Mara and the northern Serengeti is best, as the migration is basically unpredictable; you will improve your chances of catching the migration at its prime.
Olakira; Sayari; Migration Camp

Most years the big herds have crossed back into Tanzania. Central Serengeti base is recommended.

Full Itinerary

DAY 1 Nairobi

After clearing airport formalities, you are greeted by a big smile from the Born Free airport host. Then you are off on a short drive to the hotel for a night of rest before your safari adventure begins. The hotel has excellent restaurants that are available for dinner or a light snack

Fairview Hotel

DAY 2 & 3 Amboseli National Park – Mt. Kilimanjaro

Wake up in beautiful Kenya. Meet the Born Free guide and head out along the Mombasa Highway to Amboseli National Park. The majestic snow-capped peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro (19,352 feet) dominates the area and makes a great photographic background! The next day, you’re up just before dawn with a fresh cup of tea or coffee, and then off on an early morning game drive, the best time to see the majestic peak of Kilimanjaro. You’ll then return back to the lodge for a delicious breakfast before additional game drives throughout the day.

Ol Tukai Lodge (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 4 Mualaa – Great Rift Valley

Up early this morning for a delicious breakfast. Leave Amboseli and head to the Tanzania border, where you will meet the Born Free Tanzania specialist guide. Stop in Arusha town for lunch. There is time to experience a bit of the local villages with a visit to a cheese cooperative formed and run by local women. It provides a way for the women to achieve some financial independence, and helps to provide new schools. Continue on towards the Great Rift Valley escarpment, where refreshments and smiling faces greet you. Sit by the open lounge area, relaxing before dinner – or perhaps you would like to take an easy nature walk to hear about the unique flora and fauna of the area. The lodge sits beneath the escarpment, which looms 1, 950 feet high and is in a key location to begin your Tanzania safari.

Losirwa Tented Lodge (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 5 Lake Manyara National Park

Breakfast on the open terrace before a short 35 minute drive takes you to Manyara. Ernest Hemingway called this “the loveliest place I have seen in Africa”. The lake attracts considerable birdlife, and its surrounding terrain contains such a rich mosaic of different habitats that it supports a large number of animals. There is always good resident game such as elephants, hippos, baboons and giraffe. During the time between January and April, part of the Migration will extend into this general area, with calving of zebra and wildebeest common. Head on to the Ngorongoro Highlands for overnight at a small, simple inn. Tloma consists of 20 individual cottages sitting on the raised shoulder of a valley, with breathtaking views over coffee plantations. For those who love food – the chef at the lodge is one of the top in East Africa!!

Tloma Lodge (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 6 Ngorongoro Highlands – Elephant Caves

A fun, active day lies ahead! From the lodge, hike out to a pretty waterfall and then to the marvels of the Elephant Caves. These cave-like structures were created by the elephants – the indents on the side of the hill are where they have dug out mineral deposits from the dirt with their tusks to ingest the vitamin rich soil. Other large animals have been attracted to the soil, such as buffalo, bushbuck, waterbuck, and baboons. It is suggested to wear good hiking shoes with a gripping sole for the single trek up the hillside. For those who do not want to participate in the hike, there will be a visit to Tloma Village to meet the local family, where you can learn about their local traditions and culture. Observe the pot-makers skills and perhaps try your hand on pounding grain. Stop at a school and see the facilities. Then on to the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater for overnight.

Ngorongoro Serena Lodge (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 7 Ngorongoro Crater

Today holds more excitement, after passing through the park gate with your guide; descend down onto the Ngorongoro Crater floor. The area was originally part of the Serengeti National Park, but was split off and declared a Conservation Area in 1959. Ngorongoro is one of the most spectacular game haunts in Africa and has been designated a World Heritage site. Nearly 10 X 12 square miles in size, it contains an impressive variety of wildlife including lions with black manes, the highly endangered black rhino, herds of wildebeest, zebra, elephants, hippo, and hyena. The bird life is also prolific, with flocks of flamingos on the soda lake, plus other species of water and plains birds. Return to the rim of the crater and your hotel for time to relax, eat dinner and overnight.

Ngorongoro Serena Lodge (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 8-10 Serengeti National Park

This is the Africa you’ve been imagining. The 10,000 square mile Serengeti is the most famous wildlife sanctuary in the world. The name comes from the local Masai tribe’s word “siringiti”, for “endless plains” – although the types of terrain are as varied as the animals that live here. Massive islands of granite, grassy plains, an acacia savannah, woodlands, and a range of mountains support the thousands of species you may encounter. Take morning and afternoon game drives in the Serengeti. The lodge offers a spectacular view of the Serengeti Plains and the Mbalageti River, which attracts the migration of wildebeest and zebra.

Mbalageti Tented Lodge (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 11 & 12 Masai Mara Game Reserve

This morning, bid farewell to your Tanzania guide and board a connecting flight direct to Kenya and the Masai Mara, the northern extension of the Serengeti Plains. Masai Mara is one of the greatest wildlife habitats in the world. In one sweep of binoculars you can see a hundred elephants, lion, impala, zebra, and wildebeest. The plains are gold and the silhouettes of elephant, giraffe, and lion can be seen. Become a part of the life in the Mara – birth, feeding, death and life, an incredible experience that you will never forget. Accommodations in the Mara have been selected for their proximity to the river where the wildebeest and zebra generally cross from the Serengeti. Morning and afternoon game drives in open sided camp vehicles.
