KENYA FAMILY ADVENTURE

Special Safari for Families of All Ages

Overview

There is no other destination in the world that will capture the imagination of all ages as a safari to Africa will. A trip to East Africa will educate, amaze, and entertain everyone. This is not a passive safari but one that will bring everyone into the activities! There will be plenty of game viewing, plus time to meet with Maasai families and see how they live and play. Learn how Kenyan children participate in daily activities and see their school. Visit the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife Foundation, where you can feed the Rothchild’s giraffes, and the children of Kenya learn about wildlife that live in their country that they have never seens.

A special visit will be made to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust site. The Trust has played an extremely significant role in Kenya’s conservation efforts. Dr. Dame Daphne Sheldrick rescues orphaned elephants and rhinos. They are nurtured and then ultimately released back into the wild. To raise funds, the Trust has set up a program where one can ‘adopt’ a baby elephant or rhino. As a gift from Born Free, an elephant will be adopted in your family’s name. As one the foster parents, you are considered part of the DSWT team and for one year you will receive updates about the baby and its progress, as well as a certificate of participation.

Your family may also want to consider staying a day or two longer and volunteering at one of the many programs that Born Free supports.

YOUNG ADVENTURER’S CLUB
All children on safari between the ages of 4-12 years are members of this unique club. The aim is to offer the young adventurer an outdoor hands-on educational program, and to give the children a greater appreciation of nature, the land, the wildlife and its people. The Adventure Center has locations in the Samburu and the Mara. There will be time for members to participate in learning games and sharing with children in local schools.

DAY 7-9 Masai Mara Game Reserve

Wing over the Great Rift Valley to the next stop. For the next three days, explore the vast reaches the Masai Mara Game Reserve, the northern extension of the Serengeti Plains. The area is best known for the migration that travels in early July through September from the Serengeti north crossing into Mara in Kenya. Lions, cheetah, elephant, zebra, giraffe are all plentiful all throughout the year. Our professional guides will explain the dynamics of the wild discuss conservation and also always share humorous stories of the bush. Three game drives are done each day or if you wish you can go out on a full day game drive to the Mara River with a picnic lunch. Easy nature walks can be done from camp. Guests can also visit the Masai manyatta (village) where the Masai guide will give an intriguing account of the people and their traditions. Younger children might want to spend part of a day at the Adventure Center to learn about the wild from the Maasai naturalist. Some of the activities may include: learning how to throw a spear, build a Maasai homestead, tend the sheep, and shown how fire it started with sticks.

Mara Intrepids (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

YOUNG ADVENTURERS CLUB: The Club has experienced staff and guides who will maximize the fun and learning opportunity of each adventurer by identifying their interests, whether it be butterflies or mammals. Each naturalist is assisted by a highly trained children’s animator, who is responsible for the care and well being of all younger Adventurers. Most of our animators have worked as kindergarten teachers, and all have considerable experience looking after young children. The naturalists include: Daniel Kilonzo, a professional Kamba guide as famous for his humor as his award-winning bird knowledge. Sammy Leseita, an erudite Samburu naturalist and former mammal researcher. John ole Kerore, Kenya’s most experienced and popular Maasai children’s guide. STAR GAZING: At night sit around the campfire or go out with our expert guide to view the African sky. The Equator slices Kenya in half making it one of the few places in the world where you can observe both the northern and southern hemisphere skies from one location. BALLOON SAFARI (optional) Enjoy the thrill of an early morning hot air balloon ride as the sunrises over the stunning Masai Mara. Breakfast is served in the bush – and game drive as you return to camp.
