An exclusive Kenya safari featuring the renowned Masai Mara.

In the early 1970s, Joy Adamson, naturalist, artist and author of the best-selling book and subsequent film “Born Free” which describes her experiences raising a lion cub named Elsa, approached travel agent Alana Hayden about creating ‘Born Free’ safari groups as a fund raising arm of her organization, Elsa Wild Animal Appeal.

Having created and led the first ‘Born Free Safari’ to Africa for the Elsa Wild Animal Appeal, Alana was inspired to return home to the U.S. and lead the way in the creative journey for the traveler, by introducing to the general public affordable private safaris. This was the beginning of Born Free Safaris and Tours.

This safari is dedicated to Joy and George Adamson’s devotion to the wildlife of Kenya. In the course of his job as game warden, George shot and killed a lioness as she charged him. George realized that the lioness was protecting her cubs which were later found nearby. Taking them home, he and Joy raised the cubs including “Elsa”. The story of the life of Elsa was made famous in the novel and film “Born Free” and became a world classic beloved by young and old.

Our journey will head to the Northern Frontier District where the Adamson’s lived with their wildlife families. Joy’s Camp in Shaba is built on the site of Joy Adamson’s home. The oasis is a magnet for herds of elephant, buffalo, cheetah and lions. Elsa’s Kopje is located in Meru, where the famous lioness is buried. Then fly down to the great Masai Mara Game Reserve, the pinnacle of game viewing in all of Africa.

Wake up and enjoy a delicious breakfast. Meet your local guide, board the safari vehicle and you are off for a full day of wildlife and cultural experiences! Visit the Giraffe Center, AFEW KENYA, a charitable non-profit organization formed by Betty Leslie-Melville to save the Rothschild’s giraffe. Here you will be able to meet these wonderful creatures eye to eye. You’ll also visit the Nairobi Museum and Utamaduni Crafts Center for insight into the Kenyan culture.

Nairobi Fairview Hotel (Breakfast)

DAY 3 & 4 Meru National Park

Head to the airport this morning and fly on to Meru National Park. After an Italian style lunch, choose to either relax in your cottage on the verandah or by the swimming pool. Of all the Kenya parks, Meru presents the widest variety of landscapes and habitats. Forest, swamp and savannah are complemented by over a dozen rivers coming from Mount Kenya’s slopes. A great variety of wildlife exists, some in huge quantities. All the Big Five are here, and it is great place to spot cheetah and leopard.

Stay at the lovely Elsa’s Kopje lodge. Set within the formation of the Kopje, the lodge and its nine cottages are invisible as you approach your destination. Named after Elsa the lioness, this property is located above the site of the Adamsons’ original campsite, where George and Joy Adamson brought up Elsa the Lioness and her 3 cubs. Activities here include day and night game drives, guided bush walks, cultural visits, excursions to the Tana River, line fishing and trips to the Adamson Camp in Kora.

Elsa’s Kopje (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 5 & 6 Shaba National Reserve

Fly on today to the fascinating semi-desert Northern Frontier District of Kenya. After lunch and a siesta you will enjoy an extended afternoon game drive. The tranquil Uaso Nyiro River attracts a wide number of rare wildlife and provides a natural habitat for crocodile. Long necked gerenuk, Grevy´s zebra and reticulated giraffe are species not found in the less arid areas to the south. Elephant seek solace and contentment in the shallow waters of this wide, sauntering river. A large variety of African mammals, cheetah and leopard are well represented. With a magnificent background of jagged, purple mountains, a safari in these small gems in the wildlife wilderness will provide some of the best and most colourful game viewing in the country!

Joy’s Camp is built on the site of Joy Adamson’s tented home in Shaba National Reserve. The camp has 10 private tents each with its own deck area, ideal for game viewing and relaxing. The site was also home to Penny the leopard, the heroine of her last book. Activities here include game drives, guided bush walks, cultural visits to a Boran Village (seasonal) and the Joy Adamson Museum.

Joy’s Camp (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 7 & 8 Masai Mara Game Reserve

Head out to the airstrip today and fly on to the Masai Mara. The Mara is the northern extension of the Serengeti Plains of Tanzania. The annual migration of wildebeest moves from the Serengeti into the Mara, and behind the wildebeest follow the predators. The Mara has fabulous resident game all year round and never fails to disappoint. In one sweep of binoculars you can see a hundred elephants, lion, cheetah, impala, zebra, and wildebeest. Become a part of the life in the Mara – birth, feeding, death and life – an incredible experience that you will never forget!

Elephant Pepper Camp (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Hot Air Balloon Safari

DAY 9 Your Journey Onwards

Bid farewell to the bush and fly from the Mara back to Nairobi, where you will connect to your onwards international flight.
