RWANDA GORILLA ENCOUNTER
A Rare Glimpse of the Endangered Mountain Gorillas
Rwanda is a beautiful country and is a spectacular to behold with misty rainforests, lushly forested mountains and blue lakes. Parc National des Volcanoes is the home of the Mountain Gorillas. To trek the gorillas and observe them is like no other experience in Africa. Little can prepare you for the interaction that you will be having with these wonderful rare creatures. They will look you in the eyes, almost to communicate. There is gentleness, an inquisitive yet accepting stare. Then they look away and go about their routines. Dian Fossey studied the “Gentle Giants” and said the gorillas gaze was spellbinding. All monies received for gorilla permits go to support the park and protect the gorilla population.
Currently there are seven gorilla groups habituated for tourism. Treks are strenuous and at higher altitudes. You will be able to trek at your own pace. For those that are not quite fit but desire to try to trek, we can request permits for one of the groups that are generally closer to the park entrance.
Following the trek, there is a visit to a small village where you will have the opportunity to meet the local people and learn about their traditions. It is here you will be able to see where come of your travel cultural village. Here you can see first hand how travel gives back to the community. Once back in Kigali, a very moving stop is made at the Genocide Museum and Memorial.
The trip shown features Gorilla Trekking only. If you have more time we will gladly arrange for a 6 day RWANDA GORILLA & CHIMP EXPERIENCE visiting NYUNGWE FOREST RESERVE. This is the home to numerous primate species including the Silver, Vervet and stunning Golden Monkeys. Request additional information from the Born Free Safari consultants.

All rooms are large with en-suite facilities. It is located less then 25 minutes from the park gate where treks begin. The Jack Hanna House is also available for your stay. A visit can be made to a traditional Rwandese homestead located nearby the property.
Gorilla Trekking is an extremely personal and wonderful experience. You have the opportunity to catch a glimpse up close and personal of the animals that are most like human beings in the animal kingdom. Here you just may see them in their most natural of environments and the thrill can be unbelievable. Your purchase of the gorilla permit goes to their conservation and habitat.

DAY 2-3 Gorilla Trek
After breakfast take a short drive to Park Headquarters and meet with your guides and trackers who will talk about the gorilla trekking. The trekking can take from 1 to 6 hours and climb to altitudes in excess of 7,500 feet. The terrain is rough and muddy at times. Although the hike is physically demanding the beauty of the forest and surrounding scenery make the trekking worth while. The Mountain Gorillas, the world’s most endangered ape, is found only in small portions of protected afro montane forests in northwest Rwanda. The mountain gorilla is one of many species unique to these forests, and it’s also home to many wonderful birds, primates, large mammals, reptiles, insects and plants.
Picnic lunches will be provided and be sure to bring plenty of water with you. It can rain at a few minutes notice; hence waterproof clothing is essential including zip lock bags for cameras and film. We cannot guarantee seeing Gorillas.
