Walking & Open-Vehicle Tanzania Safari in Remote, Wild Africa

Vast, remote and wild, the Selous Game Reserve and Ruaha National Park give the visitor a true feeling of the traditional, old-world African safari. These parks, located in southern Tanzania, offer a dramatic contrast to the parks in the northern area, and give the visitor the chance to get out of the vehicle and explore on foot. The parks are massive – over 4 times the size of the Serengeti. The area is unexploited, with no human habitation allowed, and tourist facilities have been kept to a minimum.

The walking safaris are a thrilling experience. Set out on foot, passing quietly though the bush, experiencing the nature and wildlife. Learn about the plants and trees and their medicinal uses. Here about how guides track following spoors. The professional guides are armed but rely on years of experience and a keen sense of the bush. Excitement is always around the corner! Guided walks are generally 2 – 3 hours, are for ages 16 and up, and can be combined with camping under the stars or as part of a stay at one of the permanent tented lodges. Game drives and boating safaris can also be done in this unique area.

DAY 1 Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania

Upon arrival in Dar es Salaam, you are welcomed at the airport and escorted to your hotel. If you are arriving from Northern Tanzania, you may be able to fly directly to Selous. The Born Free Safari Consultants will discuss the best coordination or your arrival plans.

DAY 2-4 Selous Game Reserve

An early morning flight takes you to the vast, pristine and largely undiscovered Selous Game Reserve, four times the size of the Serengeti and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You are met at the airstrip by the Selous Safari guide and escorted to camp. The Selous Game Reserve is one of the largest areas in the world set aside for wildlife preservation, and it attracts both Eastern and Southern African wildlife, both resident and migratory, and over 440 species of birds. The Selous is a few feet above sea level with woodland, flood plains, sand rivers and the impressive Rufiji River. The waterways of the Rufiji River Delta attract elephant herds, hippos, and crocodile.

Selous Luxury Camp (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 5-7 Ruaha National Park

This morning fly to Ruaha National Park, Tanzania’s second-largest National Park. The park is home to species that are found in the eastern and southern areas of Africa, plus over 450 species of birds. Large herds of elephant and buffalo are the principal attraction, with sightings of greater and lesser kudu as well as the majestic sable antelopes. Ruaha has one of the greatest populations of elephant in Africa, and there are large numbers of lion, leopard, cheetah and the rare African Hunting Dog. The area is good for game viewing year-round and has the lowest rainfall in Tanzania.

Base for explorations will be the Mwagusi Safari Camp. Flexibility is the key here, and you can choose from full day game drives with picnic lunch and game walks. Vehicles have been specially adapted to be open-sided. The camp itself has a wonderful rustic feel – but nothing is left behind in comfort.
