Full Itinerary

DAY 1 Arusha

Upon arrival in Arusha, you will be welcomed at the airport and transferred to your lodge, which is set in lush tropical gardens in sight of lovely Lake Duluti.

Mountain Village Lodge (Dinner)

DAY 2 Arusha National Park – Momella Lakes

Your family guide will meet you at the hotel. There will be time to discuss the upcoming days, and the planned and unplanned events. Board your 4-wheel Land Cruiser or Land Rover and head out to Arusha National Park. The entrance leads into a shadowy montane forest inhabited by blue monkeys and the acrobatic black-and-white colobus. In the midst of the forest is Ngurdoto Crater, whose steep cliffs can be dotted with Cape buffalo and warthog.

Later, head to the Momella Lakes, sometimes tinged pink with thousands of flamingos. The lakes support a rich array of birds, giraffes, zebra and antelope. It is here that the snow-capped peaks of Mt. Kilimanjaro may reveal their majesty. Predators are rare in the area, so this will allow a forest walk around the rim of the Momella. A canoe safari on the lake is planned, water levels permitting.

Mountain Village Lodge (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 3 & 4 Tarangire National Park

Head out through the Tanzania countryside for a two hour drive to Tarangire Park. This area is the quintessence of Old Africa. The intriguing atmosphere seems almost prehistoric, with ancient baobab trees, scrub bush, strangely horned antelopes and tall giraffe. After dinner, head into the bush by vehicle – but this time equipped with large spotlight looking for the rare nocturnal species! Night game drives will only be available in the Kikoti/Tarangire area.

Kikoti Tented Camp (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 5 Lakemanyara – Cultural Walks & Masai Interaction

Early morning start for the short drive to Lake Manyara Park. The area is comprised of five different vegetation zones in a very small area. It is always great fun to watch the hundreds of baboons scampering around – but the highlight is finding an elephant family playing and washing in the many little ponds in the area.

This afternoon is relatively unplanned, as there are hopes of encountering the local people in an undisturbed manner, carrying on with their daily duties. We will also do our best to coordinate a soccer game, a visit to a school or a local celebration. After a picnic lunch, head off to Mto Wa Mbu. This vibrant town has a thriving market where 125 tribes gather to trade. This is an opportunity to trade with the local artisans for some souvenirs. Then continue towards the Great Rift Valley Escarpment, where a visit is made to a local Maasai manyatta, which will give you another glimpse of traditional life.

Tloma Lodge (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 6 – 8 Serengeti National Park

After breakfast, head out to explore the vast Serengeti Plains, the world’s greatest wildlife habitat. The most famous features of the Serengeti are the spectacular concentration of animals found nowhere else in the world, as well as the annual Great Migration. This spectacle sees more than one million wildebeest, 200,000 zebras and 300,000 Thomson’s gazelles trek to new grazing grounds. The brief population explosion of wildebeest produces over 8,000 calves a day before the migration begins. You’ll have full-day game viewing with picnic lunches. At night you’ll return to camp, have dinner (almost all dietary needs can be met) and then sit around a roaring campfire hearing stories of the African bush!

Our private mobile tented camp is the key to the next several days game viewing. The camp is not permanent and will be set up in an excellent location, according to where the animals will be at the time of year you travel. The tents are very large, with facilities en-suite. You will have plenty of washing water, safari-style hot showers, water basins and fluffy towels. Beds have full linens, and there are chairs, wash basins and verandahs. With younger families, tents are placed abutting each other for easy of access. Dinner is served in a dining tent, or if you choose, dinner can be served under the stars around a roaring campfire. Our eco-friendly camps have superior service, wonderful fresh foods and sustainable co-existence with the surrounding areas.

Born Free Mobile Tented Camp (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 9 Olduvai Gorge – Ngorongoro Highlands

Break camp after breakfast heading east, with game viewing en route. Stop at a small Maasai cooperative before heading to Olduvai Gorge (correct spelling is Oldupai), sometimes called “the Cradle of Mankind.” This is the site where the Leakey’s discovered one of the oldest human skulls. This archaeological site is rich in fossils, many hominid remains and one of the oldest stone tool technologies to have been found. Recovered objects date as far back as 2 million years. Walks can be done in the area.

Ngorongoro Serena Lodge (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 10 Ngorongoro Crater

Descend down on to the floor of the Crater for a full day game viewing. The Ngorongoro Crater is about 12 miles across, making it the largest undamaged collapsed volcano in the world. The crater rim is at an altitude of 7,500 ft. ensuring cool evenings. It is estimated that more than 30,000 animals can be found within the crater walls at any one time. You can anticipate seeing elephant, zebra, Cape buffalo, lion, flamingos, and – if you are lucky – the rare rhino.

Ngorongoro Serena (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 11 Your Journey Onwards

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast as the safari draws to a close. Admire the grand views of Ngorongoro before heading out. Stop as you wish to purchase last minute handicrafts, or for a picture of wildlife that occasion the roadside. There is a dayroom for your convenience before bid a fond goodbye to your guide and heading off for your onward journey.
