Hide content What is Mobile Camping?

An authentic African safari of yesteryear should always include several days of camping. Sit around the campfire, hear stories of the bush, dine under the stars and listen to the sounds of the wilderness. Enjoy an intimacy with nature that is unsurpassed. It will be a joy to leave the camp just before sunrise and not see another vehicle for hours. Camping does not improve your game viewing opportunities, but does provide a great ambiance.

A Mobile Camp is a temporary canvas tent that is set up exclusively for Born Free or your personal safari, located as close to the herds as possible. The camp does not move each day; however the private campsites are selected carefully for the best location and the most scenic views. Private campsites are provided on all but our “Adventure” level value camp.

Each mobile camp has private sleeping tents and a separate dining tent. The tents are large and stand-up style, with screens and canvas-protected flooring. The tents’ furnishings consist of queen or twin beds with a full mattress, nightstands, vanity, clothing rack, flashlight and solar lamps. Each tent has a bathroom en-suite, with semi-flush toilets and a camp hot and cold shower. Linens, towels and robes are provided in each tent and laundry is complimentary.

A full bar is set up, and most beverages and most non-premium liquors are included in the price of the trip. Our specially trained cook prepares meals on a charcoal fire or Dutch oven, and the food is often the best on safari. Each camp has a generator to provide electricity during the day for operating the camp, and electricity can be arranged inside the sleeping tents for large groups. Generators are turned off when the travelers return so that the sounds of the bush can be appreciated.

Mobile safari standards can vary from luxury to more rugged in style. No matter which style you choose, Born Free provides excellent equipment, service, food and locations, and combines mobile camps with other types of accommodations that will complement the tented experience.

Full Itinerary

DAY 1 Arusha

Touch down in Tanzania and head through customs and immigrations. A smile and big “Jambo” (Swahili for hello) from the Born Free professional safari guide greets you. Head to your hotel for dinner. Early to bed with dreams of your upcoming adventure!

Arumeru Lodge (Dinner)

DAY 2 Lake Manyara National Park

A wonderful fresh breakfast is served, and then you are then off on safari! Your Born Free guide will pick you up at the hotel around 8:30 a.m. Board the deluxe Born Free 4×4 safari vehicle and head out through the lush Tanzania countryside. During your Tanzania safari, there will be times between parks where you will be able to stop at handicraft shops, take pictures, or just stretch your legs.

Drive time to Lake Manyara is approximately 1 ½ hours. Lake Manyara has a variety of habitats with the consequence of a spectacular diversity of animals and birds. Wildlife includes blue and Vervet monkeys in the forest treetops, and guinea fowl on the forest floor. Baboons are found within all habitats. Lion, impala and elephants inhabit the Acacia woodland. And in the open grasslands you may see buffalo, zebra, giraffe, wildebeest, bushbuck, waterbuck and a few rhino. Over 380 species of birds have been identified within the park. There is also a great hippo pool, and you may even see the tree-climbing lions.

Enjoy a picnic lunch in the park and then head up the Great Rift Valley Wall for overnight on the rim, which offers spectacular views.

Kirurumu Tented Lodge (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 3 Lake Eyasi – Cultural Experience

Travel truly off-the-beaten path for the first time today. It will take several hours to get to the home of the Tanzania Bushmen. While it is possible to encounter wildlife, this area is special for its interactions with the local tribes. The WaDatoga are a pastoral group like the Maasai, and it is always interesting to visit their boma/village. Chance (but educated) encounters will introduce you to the nomadic Barbaigs and the WaHadzas, an ancient tribe who are one of the last click-speaking hunter-gather tribes. They still hunt for game with bows and arrows and do not have any actual permanent homes.

Kisima Ngeda Tented Camp is situated on the shores of the seasonal Lake Eyasi. The Alipi escarpment wall rises 2,000 feet up into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, providing stunning views over the Rift. The camp is beautifully set in a Llala palm and acacia forest.

Kisima Ngeda Permanent Tented Camp (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 4 Lake Eyasi To Ngorongoro Highlands

There is time today to explore the trails around the lake, canoe (in season) along the shore, where you can see a variety of birdlife and small game, mountain bike on baobab and acacia lined trails, or walk through the nearby tribal village.

Leave Lake Eyasi in the afternoon, heading toward the Ngorongoro Highlands. Arrive in time for the sunset over the lovely Ngorongoro Crater.

Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 5 Ngorongoro Crater

Descend down on to the floor of the Crater for a full day game viewing. The Ngorongoro Crater is about 12 miles across making it the largest, undamaged collapsed volcano in the world. The crater rim is at an altitude of 7,500 feet. It is estimated that more than 30,000 animals can be found within the crater walls at any one time. You can anticipate seeing large numbers of hippo, pink flamingoes, elephant, Cape buffalo, lion, and possibly the rare black rhino.

Ngorongoro Serena – Lake Masek Tented Lodge (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 6-9 Serengeti National Park

After breakfast – head out to explore the vast Serengeti Plains, the world’s greatest wildlife habitat. The base for explorations will be a Born Free private mobile tented camp. You will be pleasantly surprised to the high comfort in the tent and generally are lulled to sleep by the sounds of the creatures of the night. Each morning wake up before dawn. Your tent steward will bring you hot coffee or tea and then you are off on a sunrise game drive. The plains are gold and the wildlife just starting to stir. Silhouettes of giraffe and elephant loom on the hills. Some days will be spent on full day game drives and on others you may wish to return to camp for lunch and then head out in the afternoon when the game is most active. Return to camp for a delicious dinner. Before retiring sit around the roaring campfire hearing stories of Africa.

Our camp is highly personalized and set in a classic style. The large tents have comfortable beds, plus private toilet and shower facilities. Service and food is excellent and we can cater to most dietary needs.

Born Free Private Mobile Tented Camp (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 10 Tarangire National Park

Up early this morning and head out crossing the Ngorongoro Highlands to the beautiful Tanzania countryside. It is basically an all day drive from the Serengeti to Tarangire, depending on the time of year and the location of the Serengeti campsite. Interesting stops will be made along the way including a walk through the Mto Wa Mbu village. This is a hub for trade as well as handicrafts. The locals are always game for a good “game” of bargaining and may even invite you to tray some of the local banana beer!!

Tarangire National Park, the quintessence of Old Africa, the intriguing atmosphere seems prehistoric with ancient baobab trees, scrub bush and strangely horned antelopes and tall giraffe. There is not only excellent wildlife, but also over 300 bird species! Arrival at the lodge will be late in the day.

Kikoti Tented Lodge (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 11 Lokisale – Maasai Village – Tarangire

Dawn game drive – then you are off to the Lokisale Community where you will get to see this small town in action. This village is the center of activity but still as it was many years ago. You are greeted in Maasai “Supai” and then taken on an in-depth tour of the community. Return to Tarangire with a bit more game viewing. This evening dinner will be set out in the bush and a final night drive before returning for a good nights sleep.

Kikoti Tented Lodge (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 12 Tarangire National Park – Mulala – Your Journey Onwards

Out on your last game drive on the “Path of the Masai” – a journey enriched with wildlife, new found friends and beautiful scenery. Crisscross coffee and banana plantation and heading up the slopes of Mt. Meru. A warm welcome at the Agape Mulala Empowerment Community set up by a women’s group. Through the economic activities such as making and selling cheese and baking bread, the women have created project which support their families and preserve their culture.

Continue to Arusha where a dayroom waits for your convenience. This evening bid “Sere inna,” Maasai for good-bye as you are taken to the airport for your departing flight.
