“Tembo” is swahili for Elephant, and this tour will introduce you to these magnificent giants. For over 25 years Daphne Sheldrick worked alongside her late husband, David to help the wildlife orphans of the region. Discover Kenya salutes Daphne Sheldrick and her and her husband’s quest in rehabilitating baby elephants and rhino back into the wild. Discover Kenya will take you to some of the areas that have been the site of these rescue projects. You will also visit the Sheldrick Orphanage which will be featured in the new Disney movie, My Wild Life and was featured in the IMAX film Born To Be Wild. The safari takes you to the finest wildlife areas – from Amboseli with its backdrop of Mt. Kilimanjaro to the Maasai Mara – home of the Maasai and over 750 wildlife species. You’ll stay away from the crowds in private conservancies which will afford you the chance to get away from the crowds and take night game drives, bush walks, visit schools and an authentic Maasai village. Concentrate on quality game viewing rather spending time on the road – fly from park to park.

DAY 1 Nairobi

A warm welcome waits once you are through customs and immigrations. Your personal Born Free host will escort you to the hotel and fill you in on the upcoming adventure. Relax this evening as you get ready to start your safari adventure early tomorrow morning.

Ole Sereni Hotel

DAY 2 & 3 Amboseli Game Reserve

Begin your day with a grand buffet breakfast, and then you are off on safari! Fly to the foothills of Mt. Kilimanjaro and the Amboseli Game Reserve. You are met by professional guides who take you on your first exciting game drive in the bush, en-route to your lodge. Amboseli is a place of stark contrast, the name meaning “salty dust” in Maa the language of the Maasai. Amboseli, despite its sometimes dry and dusty appearance, has an endless supply of water filtered through thousands of feet of volcanic rock from Mt. Kilimanjaro’s snow melt. These underground streams converge into clear fresh water springs in the heart of the park. The powder like dust is volcanic ash, which was thrown from Kilimanjaro millennia ago. The main attraction of Amboseli is its vast herds of elephant. The bull elephants here have some of the largest tusks in Kenya.

The early morning and late afternoon photographic opportunities are incredible, with plentiful game and Mt. Kilimanjaro (the highest freestanding mountain in the world) providing an impressive and majestic backdrop.

Tawi Lodge (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 4 –7 Maasai Mara Game Reserve

After a delicious breakfast, board a scenic flight to the Siana Conservancy & Maasai Mara Game Reserve. The Mara is the northern extension of the Serengeti Plains of Tanzania, and is an essential part of the ecosystem. During the months of July through September, the annual migration of the wildebeest heads from the Serengeti north into the Mara – and with them follow the predators. The Mara has fabulous resident game all year round and never fails to disappoint. In one sweep of binoculars you can see a hundred elephants, lion, cheetah, impala, zebra, and wildebeest. Become a part of the life in the Mara – birth, feeding, death and life – an incredible experience that you will never forget.

The days in the Mara are tailored to your interests and follow the wildlife movement. You may choose a game drive in the morning and a walking safari or a village visit in the afternoon. The knowledgeable guides are experts in finding the wildlife. On full day game drives, a delicious lunch will be served in the bush. The customized vehicles are equipped with oversized windows and large photographic hatches making sure that you have the best unobstructed views of this spectacular area. After dinner in camp, sit around a roaring campfire and exchange stories of the bush.

You camp offers many activities, including some that cannot be done in the main Mara Reserve. Options include game drives, walks, night drives, authentic village visits, eco-tourism and giving back to the local community. This deluxe camp is located away from the high concentration of camps along the Mara River, allowing you a better game viewing experience without being surrounded by minivans. The professional guides are committed to searching out the best game, whether they are in the Mara proper or on the Siana Community Conservation Area which has plentiful game and even its own resident wildebeest herd.

Leleshwa Camp (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 11 Your Journey Onwards

Fly from the Mara back to Nairobi, where arrangements have been made for you to visit the Sheldrick Animal Orphanage Here you will meet some of the baby elephants that are being cared for. You will also learn how your adoption helps to reintroduce the baby into it’s natural habitat. Visit the nursery where you can get close to (and even possibly have a hands on experience) with these adorably playful creatures.

You will have a vehicle and driver at your disposal for last minute shopping or sightseeing before being transferred to the airport to check in for your departing flight.
