UGANDA PRIMATE ENCOUNTER

Chimpanzee and Gorilla Trekking in "The Pearl of Africa"

Overview

Uganda is considered to be the “Pearl of Africa”. Situated astride the Equator, it boasts the beautiful snow-capped “Mountains of the Moon”, flood lands, an “impenetrable” forest and safari country. The wildlife opportunities here are very good, with the highlight being the Mountain Gorillas.

Gorilla Trekking is an extremely personal and wonderful experience. You have the opportunity to catch a glimpse, up close and personal, of the animals that are most like human beings in the animal kingdom. Here you just may see them in their natural environment – the thrill can be unbelievable. Your purchase of the gorilla permit goes to their conservation and habitat.

Uganda’s has one of the largest primate populations in the world, including Red Colobus, Black and White Colobus and the endangered Chimpanzee. Kibale National Park is an extensive equatorial rainforest noted for its primate diversity. Guided walks are arranged by the rangers.

The Born Free trips to this region are bespoke adventures, customized to your time frame and requirements.

Uganda

DAY 1 Entebbe

Upon arrival in Entebbe, you will be welcomed at the airport and transferred to your lodge, where you will have a short safari briefing.

Kampala Serena Hotel

DAY 2 & 3 Rwenzori Mountains– Kibale Forest

Up early this morning and head out for Kibale (eight hour drive). Many stops will be made along the way in the magnificent tea plantations and into the Kibale tropical rain forest. Kibale is inhabited by an astonishing variety of primates, including the Chimpanzee, and has one of the highest primate densities in the world. For the next two nights stay on a high saddle located between two crater lakes. Breathtaking views and cooler climate are some of the areas features. The lodge is very simple with en suite facilities. There is no electricity in the remote area, but ample candle and oil lamps provide an ambiance of the traditional safari.

The forest here is comprised of pristine lowland tropical rain forest, montane woodland and tropical trees. Join a walk led by excellent local guides. Walking is not difficult, as paths have been made through the area. The birdlife is colorful and very impressive, with at least 325 species, many which are found no where else.

The chimps are lively and intelligent and swing through the thick trees, and their chattering never seems to stop. They are a bit hard to see as they rarely sit long enough for a photo, but you will know they are there!

Ndali Lodge or Kibale Primate Lodge (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 4 Queen Elizabeth National Park And Bwindi

Drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park this morning. Pass through Fort Portal and then head south along the Rwenzori Mountains. Descend into The Great African Rift Valley and Queen Elizabeth National Park before continuing to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest for the evening.

Mahogany Springs (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 5 & 6 Bwindi Impenetrable Forest Gorilla Trek

These are your gorilla tracking days! After breakfast, take a short drive to Park Headquarters and meet with your guides and trackers, who prep you on gorilla trekking. This is an extremely personal and wonderful experience. You have the opportunity to catch a glimpse, up close and personal, of the great Mountain Gorillas in their natural environment. The trekking can take from 1 to 6 hours and climb to altitudes in excess of 7,500 feet. The terrain is rough and muddy at times. It can rain at a few minutes notice; waterproof clothing is essential, including zip lock bags for cameras. Please note that we cannot guarantee seeing Gorillas.

Mahogany Springs (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 7 Lake Mburo National Park

Drive to Lake Mburo National Park, which is an excellent location for bird watching, and also to view antelope, impala and zebra. Game drives offer a picturesque game viewing experience with a mixture of savannah, acacia woodlands, grassy valleys, rocky outcrops, swamps, lakes and rolling hills.

Mihingo Lodge (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 8 Entebbe And Your Journey Onwards

Drive to back to Entebbe, which takes about 5 hours. If time permits, it’s possible to stop in Kampala for shopping, lunch and a visit to the Mpigi Royal Drum Makers. Continue on to the airport to connect with your international flights.
