DAY 1 Lilongwe

Today you arrive at Lilongwe airport in Malawi, where you will be met and transferred to your hotel. The capital city of Malawi is quite diverse, with both a New and Old City. A day here can be quite interesting, with a visit to the market and a look into some of the old Indian spice and cloth shops. You can also visit the tobacco auction, Malawi’s most important cash crop. Heuglin’s Lodge is situated in the quiet garden suburbs of Lilongwe’s residential area. Set in attractive gardens, the bird life is plentiful. The guesthouse offers meals and a full bar, and there is a swimming pool for guests.

Heuglin’s Lodge (Dinner)

DAY 2 Viphya Mountains

You are off this morning on a scenic 4 hour drive to Luwawa Lodge, set in the Viphya Mountains. This afternoon, you’ll have time to explore the area. The variety is endless – select from the many activities including mountain biking, walking trails and horseback riding.

Luwawa Forest Lodge (Breakfast, Dinner)

DAY 3 & 4 Nyika National Park

Today your adventure continues as you head deep into the remote area of Nyika National Park. The park is located in the far north of Malawi, and is the region’s most spectacular wild area. It boasts an incredible mixture of scenery and landscapes. Game that can be spotted includes Burchell’s Zebra, Roan antelope, leopard, hyena, jackal and serval. Birdlife is prolific, including Churring and Mountain cisticolas, Red-tufted malachite sunbird, Mountain nightjar and Bulbul, which occur deep in the canopy of the forests.

Chelinda Camp (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 5 & 6 Lake Malawi

This morning, after breakfast, you will be met by your driver/guide and taken to Chintheche Inn. Driving time is approximately 7 hours along one of the most scenic roads in Malawi. Even though this is a lengthy drive, it is very interesting – the lake shore road is very beautiful and worth the drive.

The Inn is situated on Lake Malawi’s northern shores and offers en-suite rooms. Snorkeling, swimming and boating opportunities are available at the Inn, and local excursions can easily be arranged – bird watching, diving at Nkhata Bay, points of local interest and cultural safaris.

Chintheche Inn (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Village visits
Horseback Riding

DAY 07 Zomba Plateau

Depart today for the Zomba Plateau. Stay in a lovely colonial guesthouse situated halfway up the mountain with its own private grounds. It is an ideal spot to access the many hiking trails of the plateau, and also offers mountain biking and excellent bird watching. This rest house is a good option for a group of 6 or 8 who could book the whole lodge to ensure privacy.

Zomba Forest Lodge (Breakfast, Dinner)

DAY 8 & 9 Liwonde National Park

Today your adventure continues as you are driven 3 hours to Liwonde National Park. This is arguably Malawi’s best park for wildlife. It is located along the Shire River, and as a result is rather long and thin. Thousands of hippos and crocodiles lie on the rivers banks. You can also see plenty of elephant, impala water buck, baboons and zebra who all come down to the river’s edge to drink. Less common are sable, kudu and bushbuck – but the birdlife, being on a river, is also plentiful. The mixture of the river, mopane and grassland habitats provides for a variety of animals.

Mvuu Camp (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 10 & 11 Mumbo Island – Lake Malawi National Park

This morning it’s an early start as you are driven 3 hours to Lake Malawi. From here you will be transferred to Mumbo Island. Mumbo Island is a pristine and deserted tropical island, and the undisputed jewel of Lake Malawi National Park. Mumbo Island has never been populated, and it is still in its natural state, with a thick covering of miombo woodland and ancient fig and baobab trees.

Mumbo Island Camp (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 12 Lilongwe / Your Journey Onwards

Today you return to the lake shore, where you meet up with your driver guide for the 4 hour drive to Lilongwe. On arrival you will be assisted with check-in. Please note there is a government imposed international departure tax of $20 USD.
