Born Free Tours offers a true “West Africa Mosaic”. Choose to take one of our special scheduled departure group tours, or we will create a special-interest mosaic with segments to Senegal, the Gambia, Ghana, Benin and Mali on a custom itinerary. Many trips are built around the fabulous festivals of each country.

Day 1 Accra

Upon arrival in Accra, you are greeted by our local representative, assisted through the airport and transferred to your hotel. Get a good night’s sleep before discovering this ancient empire tomorrow.

DAY 2 Accra

The day begins with a drive through the main streets of Accra to the DuBois Memorial Center for Pan-African culture. Next stop is the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, built in honor of Ghana’s first President. Continue on to the Arts Center to peruse handicrafts and traditional African clothes, then to the National Museum to view a collection of ancient and contemporary artifacts. Next, an exciting stop for handicraft lovers – visit a working art gallery before returning to the hotel for the night.

DAY 3 Accra To Elmina

This morning, the tour continues on to Elmina via the many fishing villages dotting the coastline. Among them is Abandze, where Louis Armstrong traces his ancestry to. Visit the first and largest of Ghana’s slave forts and castles in Elmina. The Elmina Castle was built by the Portuguese in 1482 and has numerous dungeons that were used during the Trans-Atlantic Slave trade.

DAY 4 Kakum Nature Park To Cape Coast Castle

Leave the hotel early in the morning and head north to Kakum Nature Park, a tropical rainforest in the heart of the Atandanso Reserve. Take a breathtaking walk on the Canopy Walkway, composed of a suspended bridge with six platforms. The next stop is the Cape Coast Castle, another hub used in the 1600’s during slave trade.

DAY 5 Elmina To Kumasi

Ghana’s Garden City, Kumasi, is the location of the King Prempeh II Museum where one can view a replica of a chief’s palace and artifacts belonging to the former kings. A highlight of the trip is the visit to the Ghanaian tie & dye industry, where local women make the magnificent and world-famous fabrics. Participants will have an opportunity to try their hand at the creation of the fabric.

DAY 6 Kumasi And Craft Villages

A wonderful day lies ahead – especially for the art and craft enthusiast. Leave the hotel this morning for the craft villages of Ahwiaa, Ntonso and Bonwire. Witness the production of handicrafts including woodcarving, the Adinkra Cloth, and the world famous kente cloth. Return to Kumasi, and in the afternoon tour the Manhyia Palace Museum. Situated on the premises of the Asantehene (king of the Ashanti People) Palace, see the exhibits of authentic Royal relics and effigies of both past and present kings.

DAY 7 Kumasi To Accra

Return to Accra, with the rest of the day at leisure. This evening, take in an entertaining display of traditional drumming and dancing.

DAY 8 Your Journey Onwards

Today you will bid farewell to Ghana and board your onward international flight. Alternatively, you can extend this itinerary with convenient travel extensions to the rest of Born Free’s West Africa Mosaic.
